Carpentry

Shuang-Ci temple has invited a professional carpenter Quan-Kun Wu, who has been recognized as an excellent traditional carpenter and lector by Ministry of Culture of Taiwan, to undergo the hand carved process of the temple and preserve the original wood pattern. The handmade process was very trifling and took a long time. It almost took two years to complete the project (From A.D.2020 to 2022). The carpenter used ancient construction methods to build the main structure of the temple without using any screw and nails. The main structure of the temple was connected by tenon and there are more than ten styles of tenon. Shuang-Ci temple picked several auspicious words to make them as wood carving, like “xǐ shàng méi shāo” (which means “someone light up like a Christmas tree”) match matsuzuru and “jǐn shàng tiān huā” which means “the icing on the cake”) on the back and front of second floor eaves. On the inside roof, the temple choose Eight Immortals (Tie Guai Li, Han Zhong Li, Zhong Guo Lao, Han Xing Zi, Lu Dong Bin, Cao Guo Jiu, Lan Cai He, He Xian Gu) to correspond to each other, “horned fish spit water” which means fire prevention and rain praying, “peony and lotus” which means continuous wealth and honor in Chinese, “pomegranate” which means someone have many children will have greater prosperity. Also, there is the carpentry about “Three Pure Ones” (Sanqing daozu) which represents Taoist architectural indicator on the ridge pole. All these artworks are very exquisite and well-arrange, just like pattern couplets.
